If it wasn't shocking the Galaxy enough, several careless passes led to a turnover that Jamiro Monteiro seize upon. He sent the ball to teammate Jeremy Ebobisse, who scored his 11th goal of the year in the 14th minute.

Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski of San Jose had to make a few early saves as the Galaxy (8-8-3, 27 points) attempted to rally. However, they suffered from the absence of two important players, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Mark Delgado, who were both forced to sit out owing to rules pertaining to health and safety.

Soon later, Los Angeles came close to making it a one-goal game. In the 60th minute, a free kick by Douglas Costa went over the crossbar after his on-target shot was stopped. To keep the score at 3-1, the Earthquakes had to clear a scoring opportunity off the goal line just before that.

In the 88th minute, Joveljic's left-footed long-range goal made it 3-2 as the Galaxy attempted to salvage a point from a tie. However, even though Los Angeles forced the Earthquakes into extra time in the second half, time ran out.

There were eight saves that Marcinkowski had to make.

The Earthquakes advanced to 2-0-1 in their last three games while the Galaxy suffered their third loss in as many games. San Jose's road record is currently 1-6-3.
